Essentials Welcome

This series features 30 lessons that will take you through a step-by-step process to prepare you to know and play what every guitarist should:

Play rhythm guitar in every key, learn how to use a capo to easily transpose, understand rhythm principles, and learn how to read studio charts with confidence.

You won't waste any time learning to read sheet music that isn't helpful. This is only the essential information that guitarists need. Once you complete this series, you will be able to play rhythm guitar in any key to virtually any song.

How Major Scales Work

Did you know that most every song is made up of only 7 notes? These notes are arranged to form chords, melodies, and solos. The major scale is foundational to the music you hear every day, no matter the style.

In this lesson, you'll learn about the major scale, how it is formed, and why it matters. In fact you probably already know it. It's commonly referred to in the song with the lyrics:  "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do"... Once you understand the major scale, you'll begin to unlock the secret of music theory.

How Studio Charts Work

Studio charts are used by professional studio musicians every day because they are the best way to chart a song with complete accuracy on only one page. Every dynamic, every repeat, every big build, and every down chorus is notated. The studio chart is a complete roadmap of a song that usually fits on only one page.

Although these charts make look unfamiliar at first, they will make learning guitar much easier. Traditional praise and worship charts have lyrics with chords written over top. The downside of these charts is that they don't specifically and clearly explain how the song progresses. Studio charts will cut practice time in half, since the flow of a song doesn't require an explanation. Check out the free PDF chart legend:
